Holiday stocking stuffers: ‘Agents of SHIELD’s’ Chloe Bennet

Skye might not have had much to smile about so far in “Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD” Season 2, but Chloe Bennet will keep fans laughing for days with her responses to Zap2it’s holiday Q&A.

“SHIELD’s” fall finale is shaping up to reveal a lot about who and what Skye is before taking some time off for a winter hiatus. To help tide you over, read on to find out everything from Bennet’s favorite Christmas scent “Chicago Christmas” to the reason she pretty much only speaks Spanish around the holidays.

1. What are you most looking forward to this holiday season?
Sleeping and eating! We work so hard during the year I’m really excited to just hang out with my family and do nothing. Riveting I know!

2. This year, are you on Santa’s naughty or nice list?
Naughty for sure.

3. Opening presents: Christmas Eve or Christmas Day?
Both duh.

4. What are the top 3 items on your stocking stuffer list?
I really like receiving underwear, socks and a toothbrush. I like my stocking to be practical apparently!

5. What are your all-time favorite holiday songs?
I pretty much only speak Spanish around Christmas cause I’m always singing “Feliz Navidad.”

6. What are your all-time favorite holiday movies?
“ELF.”

7. Best holiday scent: cookies baking, roasting chestnuts or a fresh evergreen? (Or name your own!)
There’s a new candle called “Chicago Christmas” it’s a mix of dog pee in snow and dirty slush. It’s the BEST.

8. What’s the quirkiest tradition your family has during the holidays?
We gift each other really hideous pajamas to open on Christmas Eve and then we wear them to open presents in all day on Christmas.

9. What’s the most embarrassing homemade ornament from your childhood that your mom and dad still hang on the tree?
I have some sick handmade ornaments I made when I was four out of dried pasta. I’m quite the artist.

10. Sledding or ice skating?
I love both.

11. Do you prefer to spend your holidays somewhere with snow on the ground or somewhere warm?
I like ’em snowy.

12. What is the best gift you have ever given and the best gift you ever received?
Best gift I ever been given was my dog. Best gift I’ve ever given was a scrapbook to my parents of all the kids. I like sentimental things cause I’m cheesy.

13. Hot cocoa, warm apple cider, mulled wine or a hot toddy?
All of the above. Yum.

14. Have you ever kissed anyone under the mistletoe? Will you tell us who?!
Of course I have! And no I won’t … Cough cough my boyfriend.

15. Do you go out or stay in on New Year’s Eve?
Last year I stayed in a cabin and played Trivial Pursuit and made s’more’s.

Marvel’s Agents Of Shield Creators On Skye’s Inentity and Inhumans

The Agents of SHIELD midseason finale went big, revealing the Marvel Comics-based identities of both Skye and her father, “The Doctor.” But that wasn’t all, as Skye and Raina made it into the chamber in the mysterious hidden city where a mist would transform them into something… Inhuman.

Yes, it’s true! On the heels of plenty of fan speculation, the Inhumans have made their first appearance in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, years before their 2018 movie, via Agents of SHIELD. While they may not have said the words Inhumans or Attilan, any lingering doubts as to what we’re dealing with are cleared up by executive producers Maurissa Tancharoen and Jed Whedon in my post-midseason finale chat with the duo, who confirm those are indeed Inhumans and also discuss the reveal that Skye is Daisy Johnson (and her father Marvel’s Calvin Zabo/Mister Hyde), how they decided Agent Antoine “Trip” Triplett wouldn’t survive the episode and more.

IGN: Daisy and Cal! But let’s just get out of the way for those with any doubts, since we didn’t get their full names… We can say Daisy Johnson and Calvin Zabo here?
Tancharoen: Yup. You can say it all you want!

IGN: When you introduced Skye, was it pretty firm from the get go — because fans were throwing out every single name they could think of in Marvel — but did you always know she was going to be Daisy?
Tancharoen: That was our goal from the beginning. We always knew we wanted to evolve her into something else. But we’ve been big fans of Daisy Johnson and Secret Warriors. I think that’s been pretty obvious in the series to date. So when we were given the go ahead to move forward with Daisy Johnson pretty early on, we were thrilled.

IGN: It’s not a hard leap form there to who her dad should be, given the comics gives it to you, but you approach Calvin in a different way from what we’re used to.
Tancharoen: We’ve done that with a lot of elements in our show. We’ve pulled from things that exist in the Marvel comic universe and given our own sort of twist to it so it can fit in our mythology. But yeah, we’re just excited to have those two characters in our world.
Whedon: Kyle [MacLachlan] playing it… One of the things that appeals to us about the character is not just his relation to Daisy, but the idea of someone struggling with himself, which we think Kyle plays brilliantly. He’s fast becoming one of our favorite characters to write.
Tancharoen: Oh my gosh. He’s everyone’s favorite character to write, for sure.

Is Skye Really Daisy Johnson?

On last night’s episode of Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., we got to peer into Skye’s psyche during a dream sequence. The sequence brought some of Skye’s fears to the forefront, mostly her fear of abandonment, represented by her new S.H.I.E.L.D. mother and father figures, May and Coulson. She clearly fears that her connection to the Doctor will force her new family to leave her behind.

There’s something else that may be important in that scene. May and Coulson only leave Skye behind after a music box is opened, and the song that the box plays may tell us the truth about Skye’s identity.

The song the box plays is “Daisy Bell,” which many sci-fi fans will recognize from 2001: A Space Odyssey. One might think that this particular song was chosen simply because it’s a simple song that sounds kind of creepy if played at the right speed, and in the right context, but we think it’s more than that.

Showrunners Jed Whedon and Maurissa Tancharoen both come from a musical background. Whedon used to write scores for video games, and Tanchoroen is a singer and dancer, and both co-wrote the musical Dr. Horrible’s Sing-Along Blog with Joss Whedon. Point being, when they pick a specific song for a specific scene, I find it hard to believe it’s without an equally specific reason.

According to the Doctor, “Skye” is not actually Skye’s real name. As a symbol of her lost childhood, the music box may have revealed what Skye’s true name is: Daisy. And in Marvel Comics, there’s one very notable character with the name Daisy and strong ties to S.H.I.E.L.D., and that’s Daisy Johnson, a.k.a. Quake.

This fits in snugly with our previous theory that the Doctor is actually the Marvel villain Mister Hyde, who is Daisy’s father. Daisy was introduced in Secret War, but reakky took center stage in the Secret Warriors comic book series, which followed Nick Fuy’s handpicked team of young agents, fighting the good fight against Hydra at a time when there was no officially sanctioned S.H.I.E.L.D. (does that premise sound familiar to anybody else?).

Daisy also has a very similar origin story to Skye’s. She once went by a fake name (in the comics, it’s Cory Sutter rather than Skye, likely changed to keep her identity from being too obvious in Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D.), and she was taken in by S.H.I.E.L.D. at a young age, similar to how S.H.I.E.L.D. agents took Skye from China. Daisy is then groomed by Nick Fury, similar to how Skye has received special attention from Coulson, and eventually becomes an Avenger and the director of S.H.I.E.L.D. herself, hinting at potentially big things in Skye’s future.

There are some differences however. For one, Daisy is not an Inhuman, and we believe, at this point, that we can safely assume Skye is. Daisy’s powers were first believed to be a mutation, but were later revealed to be a side effect of her father’s altered DNA. We still believe this works, just with Marvel Studios taking some liberties. Instead of being mistakenly pegged as a mutant, she is accurately pegged as the closest thing Marvel can legally use to a mutant, an Inhuman (though Marvel could still throw a twist at us in the final stretch).

Of course, nothing is confirmed until it’s confirmed, but the clues just keep coming, and we think this theory just keeps getting stronger as they do.

Chloe Bennet Talks #Skyeward & Major Changes Coming To The Show

When fans first met Skye (Chloe Bennet) at the beginning of Marvel’s Agents of SHIELD, she was a rebellious hacktivist who was brought into the fold against her will. Now, she’s almost a completely different person including being a full fledged member of the team, a place Chloe Bennet never saw coming.

With the show primed for major changes heading into tonight’s episode, “…Ye Who Enter Here,” ComicBook.com caught up with Bennet about Skyes growth, if she still ships #Skyeward, and so much more.

What has the journey been like for you, growing with the character of Skye over the course of last season and this one? There’s certainly been a lot of developments, so has that had any effect on you?
I’d like to think, I’ve grown a ton with Skye. The writers and showrunners have been super generous to me with Skye’s storyline and how much growth I’ve had with her. Just look at how far she’s come in the time between the pilot and the first episode of this season?! THEN look how far she’s come since even that episode. It’s been a blast.

Luckily, we’ve been able to keep her self deprecation, her sense of humor and all the things that make Skye, Skye. It’s been a lot of fun to play her, because her growth is my growth too, you know? We both have that ball busting attitude, and at the same time I’ve grown so much as an actor thanks to Clark and the rest of the cast.

When we started this show, nobody knew anyone from anything and a lot of us were still very new at this whole thing. Clark and I have had pretty personal scenes together on screen that a lot of that father/daughter mentorship has translated off screen as well. He’s been a HUGE mentor for me and my growth in this business so it’s a lot of fun to see the interpersonal relationships we have as colleagues, pay off on the show.
