ABC seem keen to keep Agents Of SHIELD going, and they still haven’t officially cancelled Marvel’s Inhumans, either…

Despite a critical savaging and what can most charitably be described as underperformance in the ratings, Marvel’s Inhumans still isn’t officially dead at ABC. Well, at least the network isn’t copping to it yet.

ABC has enjoyed a reasonable amount of sustained success with its first Marvel venture, Agents Of SHIELD, currently airing its fifth season amid talk of a creative resurgence on the show. Inhumans, on the other hand, was another story. Trouble seemed afoot early on with Inhumans, which was originally planned as a feature film in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and then found its basic concepts used as mutant substitutes to feed stories on Agents Of SHIELD. Spearheaded by Scott Buck, showrunner of another troubled Marvel TV show, Iron Fist, things looked shaky when Inhumans was shunted off to an unfavourable Friday night timeslot, which wasn’t exactly a vote of confidence.

The network won’t yet officially squash hope of Inhumans season 2, but it sure sounds unlikely. “It didn’t perform for us at the level that we would’ve wanted,” ABC boss Channing Dungey told Entertainment Weekly. “We haven’t made any official decision yet about what we’re going to pick up in May, but I will say that the numbers, unfortunately, were less exciting for us than we hoped they would be.”

The numbers weren’t great, true, and the critical reception was also less than great. You’d be hard-pressed to find any corners of the internet all that invested in seeing a second season happen (we would, however, sign up for a Lockjaw spinoff without even blinking).

Despite all that, there are still plans to develop Marvel shows for ABC. “We continue to be very excited with what they’re doing with SHIELD,” Dungey said. “We’ve tried a few things that haven’t worked out as well as we would’ve liked. We developed a couple things this season that we don’t think are going to end up going forward, so we’re going to look really carefully about what we do next, because the idea for us is to come up with something that works very well for both Marvel and ABC, so we’re going to continue to try there.”

So far, ABC hasn’t had much luck with Marvel outside of Agents Of SHIELD, though. A proposed spinoff, Marvel’s Most Wanted, never got past the pilot stage, and there has long been talk of John Ridley developing a mystery Marvel show for the network, but that appears to have stalled entirely, with no mention of it in quite some time. Hopefully it’s still alive. There was talk of a Damage Control TV series, too, but that may also be dead.

Maybe ABC will have to content themselves with a sixth season of Agents Of SHIELD until they can figure it all out. In the meantime, expect official word on the fate of Inhumans to come in May during upfronts.
